Community and Stakeholder Consultation

Landowners of the Mount Peter study area, residents and businesses of Gordonvale and Edmonton, local school students, community groups, sporting associations, Council State Agencies and others all have an important role to play in planning for Mount Peter.

To be successful, the Mount Peter Structure Plan must reflect what is important to local people and respond to the unique physical, social, economic and cultural features of the area. To ensure this happens the master planning process includes a strong consultation component.

The following events, activities, and groups will enable a diversity of community and stakeholder members to participate in Mount Peter master planning:

  • Community and landowner reference group - Council has established a reference group that includes local landowners and community groups. The reference group will provide landowner and community views throughout the process and make sure that the structure plan reflects local views and interests

  • Community workshops - Large scale workshops that all community members will have the opportunity to attend. These workshops will be used to gain broader community input and feedback throughout the planning process. The initial workshops will focus on identification of key issues and values, confirmation of the Mount Peter vision, and feedback on possible development concepts

  • Outreach activities - At various stages throughout the planning process, members of the master planning group will go out to where the community is and seek their views on the evolving plans for Mount Peter. Outreach activities include working with local schools, established community and business groups and places where people visit and congregate like local shopping centres and markets

  • Enquiry by Design Workshop - This is an intensive, multiple day design workshop that is the centrepiece of the design and engagement process. The design workshop will include a number of opportunities for community members and other key stakeholders to participate

  • Community information sessions - Used at various stages of the process to provide the general community with an opportunity to learn about and comment on the evolving plans for Mount Peter

  • Community open day - A major consultation event that will occur during the exhibition period where the broader Cairns community will be encouraged to attend to view the draft structure plan. Will be accompanied with a range of activities such as children's activities, community barbecue etc.

Throughout the master planning process, members of the greater Cairns area community will be kept informed of project events and activities through newsletters, local media advertising and this web site.

In addition to these consultation activities, the master planning group will also be working with Council, State Agencies and the Mount Peter Master Planning Taskforce.
