Cairns Regional Council's CairnsPlan and the Queensland Government’s Far North Queensland Regional Plan : FNQ 2031 identify Mount Peter as the priority urban growth corridor for Cairns.

Planning for Mount Peter will take place over the next 3-5 years, with development expected to commence in 2011.

By 2037, Mount Peter is expected to accommodate around 42,500 residents. New development will help meet the housing, employment, and service needs of a growing and diverse southern corridor population.
