Community Pin-Up Session Planned for Wednesday 5 May 2010, 6pm - 8pm @ Council Chambers (119-145 Spence Street, Cairns)

With the input of state government and other stakeholders, the Draft Structure Plan and supporting documents are now being reviewed by Cairns Regional Council. This represents the completion of Milestone 5 of the project.

Significant work has been undertaken over the last few months to better inform the Draft Structure Plan. This includes confirmation by the Department of Infrastructure and Planning (DIP) that the estimated population of Mount Peter will grow to approximately 42,500 people by around 2037. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) has also confirmed that the proposed busway will be positioned in the central median of the sub-arterial thoroughfare, providing a commitment to public transport services as development in Mount Peter occurs.

A Community Pin-Up Session is planned for the evening of Wednesday 5 May 2010, where more information about the Draft Structure Plan and supporting documents will be available for view and comment. The Pin-Up Session will include a formal presentation as well as opportunities to view draft work and provide feedback.

There will be other opportunities to provide input and feedback as the project progresses, including a formal public consultation process that will be conducted later in the project once the Structure Plan and supporting documents have been finalised.

The April 2010 newsletter will provide a project update and more details about the Pin-Up Session planned for Wednesday 5 May 2010 from 6.00pm to 8.00pm at Council Chambers (119-145 Spence Street, Cairns). Enquiry by Design (EBD) Draft Urban Framework Plan - Now Available

The EBD Draft Urban Framework Plan (13/02/09) is a draft plan resulting from the Mount Peter Enquiry by Design (EBD) Workshop held 9 - 13 February 2009.

This draft plan will inform the Structure Plan through further refinement over the coming months. This plan is not endorsed by Queensland Government or Cairns Regional Council.

The Draft Urban Framework Plan should be viewed in conjunction with the Mount Peter EBD Outcomes Report, which gives background to how the plan was developed and what it represents.

Report: Community Workshop, 27 November 2008

A community workshop was held at Gordonvale RSL on 27 November 2008.

The purpose of the workshop was to:

Inform, educate and update the community about master planning for Mount Peter and its context
Seek community input to inform the planning framework for Mount Peter
Seek feedback to affirm the vision for Mount Peter
Generate community interest in the master planning process.

Importantly, a key focus of this workshop was to highlight and discuss with community members the tradeoffs associated with development and population growth and to specifically discuss how development in Mount Peter can be designed to be compatible with, and reflect, the FNQ ‘way of living'. (This was identified as a key issue in the first community workshop in October).

This second workshop aimed to involve participants in a planning exercise to accommodate 50,000 people in the Mount Peter study area in order to manage expectations and to increase community understanding of potential structure plan outcomes.

You are invited to participate in the Enquiry by Design process by attending the following public sessions, to be held at Council Chambers - 119-145 Spence Street, Cairns:

Wednesday 11 February 2009, 5.00 - 7.00pm Opportunity to respond to ideas and concepts and provide feedback on emerging design scenarios
Friday 13 February 2009, 4.00 - 6.00pm Opportunity to review the preferred design scenario and learn about the next steps in the master planning process

No RSVP is required. The sessions are informal and you can drop in at any time between the above hours. Please help spread the word and encourage others to attend!
