A major community master planning workshop to discuss opportunities and issues in the Mount Peter project will be held tonight.
Mount Peter, between Edmonton and Gordonvale has been identified by Cairns Regional Council and the Queensland Government as the main urban corridor for future community development in Cairns.
Mount Peter is one of the largest greenfield developments in the state and over the next 20 years is expected to have a population of 50,000.
The Gordonvale workshop is a follow-up from a workshop held in mid-October at Bentley Park College where approximately 80 community members shared their view on the area's vision.
Councillor Nancy Lanskey said that this workshop is an opportunity for residents to identify issues before an in-depth planning process begins.
"This is a very futuristic development and people want to maintain the lifestyle they have here," Cr Lanskey said.
"In planning the future and designing the area we want to achieve a balance between community acceptance and marketability with regards to residential density."
"Diversity in housing, infrastructure, local employment and service needs of a growing population must be considered and these are the big issues."
Cr Paul Gregory said that this is an important opportunity for Gordonvale residents to discover how the master planning process is progressing.
"It is their chance to voice concerns or support around possible impacts on old Gordonvale," Cr Gregory said
"Decisions made in the next six months will ultimately determine the future look and feel of our area."
The planning design for Mount Peter will develop over the next three to five years with implementation to begin by 2011.
